Shout Out from Tomas of Rad Dad

Describe your zine style. What can we expect to find at your table?
It’s gonna be a hodgepodge of things: radical parenting stuff randy poetry and playful fun short fiction zines. Right now I’ve been writing stories while listening to an album – I’ve written three so far: one to journey, one to Elliott smith and one to Black Sabbath… And I love to trade!
What are your three favorite small-press/DIY publications?
· Wonder & Wander by Annie Yu — so awesome it’s this mix of her finding a used typewriter, a how to guide for using a typewriter, maps and stories of walking the streets of San Francisco
· Boob Juice by Mindi Jackson – a young mama wrestling with big questions and a little baby
· Dreams of Donuts by Heather Wreckage – a really strong comic zine dealing with occupy Oakland and other issues
· Kerbloom by Artnoose — just plain wonderful and consistent
What advice would you give to a first-time zinester or to an aspiring zinemaker?
Do it any way you can. Don’t let perfection prevent you; don’t let production quality stop you. Then mail it to your role models; write a letter and offer it. Give to friends and lovers, hell even haters and cops. I am always excited to see someone take a risk and put out his or her stories. Also read lots of zines, find out what you like offer praise and offer encouragement to others. Build your community.
What’s the best thing that ever happened to you because of zines?
The letters I get. I just got one from Kathleen Hanna about Rad Dad 22: Riot Parent, which was so amazing to hear her share her experiences and offer her encouragement. I also got a letter from Cindy Crab of Doris telling me she enjoyed the fiction novella I’ve been doing. But the best thing is getting postcards or letters from other everyday people like the one I just got from a mother isolated in Michigan looking for community, looking for other stories to let her know she is not alone in the struggle. That to makes everything worth it!
