This is what progress looks like...

Dreams of Donuts 19 still has a long way to go, but I think it's coming along nicely.

Also, I have always felt strangely reluctant to post about things on this blog other then my own personal art and I'm not really sure why.  It is my blog, and I can do whatever I want on here.
I got a zine in the mail today that I'm pretty excited about called "The Girls Have Their Say".  The zine is not only lovely, but empowering, consisting of black and white photos of female musicians from around 2007 to current.  Most of the bands are unknown to me (since it's a European zine), but I did recognize our own west coasters RVIVR.
You want an issue?  I know you do...  Check out Michelle Olaya's blog for more info.

  1. It looks like each page is drawn on a separate sheet? just curious about how you put it together as a complete issue and what the layout/copy plan is. I'm trying to figure out how to make a zine myself.

  2. Hi Kurt! That's true, each page is drawn separately. It took me a long time to develop the technique that I use now. Originally I would simply fold a basic piece of paper (letter size) in half, and cut that half letter out a little smaller (for room for photocopy borders), and draw right on that. Once I was finished with an even page count (4 pages of drawings equal one piece of paper), I would fold as many letter pages as I needed (if I drew 40 pages it would result in folding 10 pieces of paper), glue the originals on, and take to the photocopy store. Now, though, I draw somewhat bigger so that I can do more detail. It's pretty much the same process, only now I take a whole letter size piece of paper, and cut about an inch or so off long ways, and draw straight on that. Then I shrink the original down 73%, and then glue that to the master copy. Hope that all made sense.

Either way, this is the best way I've found to make a comic zine. However, there are a ton of different ways to make a zine. For a more text based zine, I would imagine you could use this process with just cutting and pasting text/borders/images, etc. Also, some people just make small one pagers, and you can see how to do that at http://rookiemag.com/2012/05/how-to-make-a-zine/.

Hope this was helpful! Let me know when your zine comes out!

    1. Heather, Thanks for that information, and the link. I'll keep you posted about my zine - sometime in '14!
