I'm starting to really hate working on big canvasses because it takes me so long.
P.S. Happy new year and all that stuff.

Zines
I'm glad that I have a hair of a mention in these two zines, because I really like them both and am glad I can talk about them on this blog.
The first is the new installment of Absolutely Zippo, "Collective Chaos", which is a collection of bay area show flyers from 1988 to 2012. My claim of note in this issue is in the acknowledgements, of people "who influenced the way I did fliers", I get my name listed. Thanks Eggy!
This zine is great. It's pretty much an illustrated history of East Bay bands and venues. It starts out with a lot of Blatz shows in yards or at Gilman, and advances to a medely of east bay events and news, like movie nights, pirate radio stations, house shows, etc. Most of the fliers are done by Eggplant, and you really get a taste of his style. I'm assuming you can order this zine from him at: P.O. Box 4985, Berkeley CA 94704.
Next is the new issue of No Gods No Mattress (#18), the Hawai'i 510 issue, all about Enola going to Hawaii with friends.
My mention in this one isn't quite a mention, but on page 71 Enola uses on of my pages for the slingshot organizer as the background, which in my book is reason enough to talk about this zine.
This zine is also really great. Enola shares her experiences visiting Hawaii and feeling more and more bothered by tourism and colonialism, not to mention white hippies. During her stay she doesn't really feel like she finds natives or glimpses of native culture amid the sea of the tourism and white hippie/weed culture, except for in books at the library. In the very end is the political article she wrote for the last issue of Slingshot based on her trip.

Describe your zine style. What can we expect to find at your table?
It’s gonna be a hodgepodge of things: radical parenting stuff randy poetry and playful fun short fiction zines. Right now I’ve been writing stories while listening to an album – I’ve written three so far: one to journey, one to Elliott smith and one to Black Sabbath… And I love to trade!
What are your three favorite small-press/DIY publications?
· Wonder & Wander by Annie Yu — so awesome it’s this mix of her finding a used typewriter, a how to guide for using a typewriter, maps and stories of walking the streets of San Francisco
· Boob Juice by Mindi Jackson – a young mama wrestling with big questions and a little baby
· Dreams of Donuts by Heather Wreckage – a really strong comic zine dealing with occupy Oakland and other issues
· Kerbloom by Artnoose — just plain wonderful and consistent
What advice would you give to a first-time zinester or to an aspiring zinemaker?
Do it any way you can. Don’t let perfection prevent you; don’t let production quality stop you. Then mail it to your role models; write a letter and offer it. Give to friends and lovers, hell even haters and cops. I am always excited to see someone take a risk and put out his or her stories. Also read lots of zines, find out what you like offer praise and offer encouragement to others. Build your community.
What’s the best thing that ever happened to you because of zines?
The letters I get. I just got one from Kathleen Hanna about Rad Dad 22: Riot Parent, which was so amazing to hear her share her experiences and offer her encouragement. I also got a letter from Cindy Crab of Doris telling me she enjoyed the fiction novella I’ve been doing. But the best thing is getting postcards or letters from other everyday people like the one I just got from a mother isolated in Michigan looking for community, looking for other stories to let her know she is not alone in the struggle. That to makes everything worth it!

Stormy Weather Projects
I made this drawing of Stephan last night for no reason. I think I might photocopy it and make it into masks for the crowd to wear the next time Escapement plays a show.
And this is a project I just started that will probably be done in a couple of months. When in Milwaukee I read a really amazing short skit by Lorna Cherot (it was written in 1970) titled "I Am What I Am" about feminism and racism within the movement. I liked it so much that I've decided to illustrate it. I absolutely can't find anything about Lorna Cherot, so unfortunatly I can't ask for permission. Here's the beginnings of this project:

Wowie! Old bay area stuff!
I looked through some of Eggplants photo's today and he has loads of old illustration that I did! I forgot about all this
This is the original cover I did for the Dreams of Donuts Anthology. I hand stenciled everything and cut and pasted the title on the front. It was ridiculously time consuming, so now I do the photo-copied cover.
This is really old illustration for slingshot.
And this stuff is from when we had a zinester-lunch meeting in the east bay and collectively made a zine together. I forget what the zine was called, but I didn't do much in it.

Old Stuff
This stuff was done during my stay at Hellarity, and was rescued from my trash by Robert Eggplant. I have it now since I went to take down my art show at Thrillhouse, and it's pretty weird to see these things again. I was usually the one at Hellarity asked to make flyers for shows, which is what two of these are, and the other two are just products of my depressing doodling when James and I were seperated and not getting along in 2011 but still neighbors.
P.S. That Trash Axis show was REALLY good. They were a crusty, heavy band from San Diego, and I hope they're still in existance. Secondly, after that Holy! Holy! Holy! show I was told that one of the members has been accused of assault in Portland and avoided accountability, so by having this up I'm not saying I support that or them in anyway. I understand it's an allegation, I'm not saying that person is/isn't guilty, I'm just saying what I heard. And lastly, those ARE Sisters of Mercy lyrics on the top one. Cheesy goth-move, I know, but I was really bummed!

Dreams of Donuts #16
Done a day before my birthday. I haven't been up to much art lately, and I could have invested more energy into this issue, but whatever, I'm glad I got it over with.
